Collaborative memoir & co-writing
For public figures, artists, and others with a story to tell and limited time to write it. I work closely with you — through interviews, conversation, and close attention to how you actually speak — to build a book that reads in your voice, not mine. I co-wrote the New York Times bestselling memoir Let Love Have the Last Word with Common, and I take on a small number of collaborative projects at a time so each gets the attention it needs.

Manuscript editing & book doctoring
Developmental, structural, and line editing for book-length fiction and nonfiction, including manuscripts already under contract that need to be strengthened before they reach a publisher. I edit the way I did as editor-in-chief of Soft Skull Press: reading for the book underneath the draft, and working toward its clearest, strongest form without flattening what makes it yours.

Nonfiction proposal development
The proposal is what sells a nonfiction book: the overview, the author's case, the sample chapters that set the voice. I develop proposals with authors headed to agents and publishers, shaping the argument for why this book, and why this author, now. I've acquired and developed nonfiction from both sides of that document, and I build the proposal to survive the room it's pitched in.
